Wheaten chaff is quite high in fibre and is a very palatable feed source. This makes it an excellent source of roughage for horses and cattle.

Many horses are fed a mix of oaten or wheaten chaff and lucerne chaff with their grain. The principle advantage of chaff is that it can be mixed with the concentrate portion of the feed so that the horse consumes forage with the concentrate. This can slow the intake of concentrate and prevent starch overload in the large intestine.
